Sundown Marathon is a special race. Held overnight, runners are flagged off into the metropolitan setting of Singapore and are sent through some of the city’s most idyllic running locations (not that many would have the luxury of taking in much of the scenery).
Running alongside like minded runners, staying ahead of that sunrise, you will never be alone in this race. In the darkest hours of the night, you’d be surprise how much you rely on fellow runners and how much you desire to take them to the finish line with you.
In 2012, I completed the marathon in a record time of 10:21. Fast for a motor accident survivor who had been run over and dragged by a lorry only a year before, and who only had been given walking privileges three months prior to the race.
Completing a marathon is a huge personal journey. A journey that would start way before the start line. It would start months, and for some, maybe years before. That journey would teach lessons of patience, persistence, dedication, gratitude, camaraderie, selflessness, and many more. My journey’s most important lesson was finding my inner strength, my True Grit.
